Where We Climb

We booked a 6 hour lesson with Brandon and Chris in early September, 2020. We are a family of 5 with kids age 11, 9 and 6. This was our first outdoor rock climbing experience and it was amazing! We thought we would be getting to scale some large boulders outside. In the end, three of us climbed to the top of Rhinoceros Rock, a mountain in Custer State Park that is 130 feet high! Brandon and Chris were great guides and teachers. They worked extremely well with the kids, including helping my 6 year old not be afraid of heights and feel safe. They were very thorough, safe and fun. I highly recommend using Sylvan Rocks Climbing School if you are anywhere close to the area. It was the highlight of our trip to the Black Hills.

Brandon was awesome! I am 57, overweight and have a fear of heights but he encouraged me to make it to the top every time! Even if you cant do one pull up you can rock climb. I am proof.

As an experienced climber who had taken a bunch of years off of the rock I’ve started to get back into climbing with my wife and two kids, 9 and 11.I had some detailed nitty gritty questions about gear for my kids and some changes that have taken place in climbing since I’d dropped off so I stopped in Sylvan Rocks in Custer to see if I could find a few answers.Darryl was a wealth of knowledge and he was able to give me all the info I needed. In detail. I had been bumping into some of the Sylvan Rocks guides while we were climbing and they were impressive. Darryl carries himself in that same professional way as he dealt with our needs. Darryl didn’t suggest we upgrade any gear, but I took the opportunity to make some purchases of gear we wanted to give a try because Darryl was so helpful.I love it when a company earns my business. Sylvan Rocks did for sure.In a couple of years the kids will be ready to head out for some instruction from a qualified guide. Sylvan Rocks will get our business.
