Ross Oyler

Ross Oyler

Sourced locally and responsibly, Ross grew up in Rapid City, SD. After earning his B.A. in International Studies and Russian (and assuring us he is in fact not a government spy), Ross escaped the flat lands of Vermillion, SD and returned to the Black Hills to begin his first season as a Single Pitch Instructor for Sylvan Rocks.

Ross’ climbing career began in the Black Hills with his brother, but it has taken him across the globe as he recently spent a year studying and climbing in Kyrgyzstan. His time there solidified his commitment to the sport and pushed him to pursue certification as a guide. Although his Russian is starting to get a little rusty, Ross is excited to be back in the Black Hills and sharing his love for climbing and the outdoors.

When he is not scaling rocks, you can find him working at the South Dakota Outdoor Shop, playing his drum set, or watching Formula One racing!

We chose to rock climb as a family of four last minute and we're so glad we did. It was one of the highlights of our South Dakota trip. Daryl found us a guide who was personable and patient. My 5 and 7 year old were able to climb 15 and 30 foot cliffs and my wife and I found the climbs exhilarating and fun. The price was reasonable and it fit well into a day trip to Custer State Park.

Brandon was our guide for the day. We chose the 4 hour climbing adventure and was absolutely perfect for us. My husband and I don't have a lot of experience with climbing and Brandon did a fantastic job at explaining everything. He talked us through every step of the way and felt safe. He went the extra mile with us and greatly appreciate it! Would go again for sure. Thanks so much!!

We were a group of 8 with varying skill levels and our guides were amazing. They worked together to ensure that we all felt comfortable on the wall, set up multiple routes, instructed those that needed it and trusted those that didn't. We all had a great time and learned a lot! I would say this is a must do activity if you are spending any time in Custer State Park.
