Jeff Llewellyn

Jeff Llewellyn | Co-Owner

Jeff began climbing at a gym in his home state of Indiana. Soon after cutting his teeth climbing outside at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky he packed up and moved to Boulder, Colorado. Since then, he has taken up traditional climbing, earned a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership from Colorado Mountain College, and gone on to become a guide for Sylvan Rocks starting in 2014.

After the 2016 season with Sylvan Rocks, Jeff went back to the Front Range of Colorado and became the Director of Guiding and Development for Evo Mountain Guides in Louisville. Now, he finds himself back in the Black Hills again, guiding and managing Sylvan Rocks.

When he’s not playing on rocks, Jeff enjoys travelling and hiking with his fiance Mykel and their puppy, Sanchito. Otherwise he spends his time biking, snowboarding, and kicking around a futbol.

My son and I did an introductory climbing day a couple of years ago with Sylvan Rocks. That day made my son fall in love with climbing. Last week, we returned for a three-day climbing session, and it was even better than the first. Our guide Shankar gave us three amazing days that culminated in my son's ascent of Spires 2 and 3 of the Cathedral Spires in Custer State Park. He was patient, good-humored, and laser-focused on safety while dealing both with my beginner's mistakes, and with my son's need for technical training. While he pushed me to stretch my limits, there was never any point at which I felt it was inappropriate. And, we got to the top of the "Aquarium." On top of all that, Shankar's just a really cool guy. I feel that we got more than our money's worth out of this experience, and we will be back to climb again with Sylvan Rocks.

Wife and I did a 6 hour with Brandon. We’d both climbed indoors a bunch, but we’d never done the real thing. We managed to hit 4 very different routes by Sylvan Lake. Brandon was knowledgeable, safe, and generally a great time. I loved every minute of it.

As an experienced climber who had taken a bunch of years off of the rock I’ve started to get back into climbing with my wife and two kids, 9 and 11.I had some detailed nitty gritty questions about gear for my kids and some changes that have taken place in climbing since I’d dropped off so I stopped in Sylvan Rocks in Custer to see if I could find a few answers.Darryl was a wealth of knowledge and he was able to give me all the info I needed. In detail. I had been bumping into some of the Sylvan Rocks guides while we were climbing and they were impressive. Darryl carries himself in that same professional way as he dealt with our needs. Darryl didn’t suggest we upgrade any gear, but I took the opportunity to make some purchases of gear we wanted to give a try because Darryl was so helpful.I love it when a company earns my business. Sylvan Rocks did for sure.In a couple of years the kids will be ready to head out for some instruction from a qualified guide. Sylvan Rocks will get our business.
