Tri-couni Nail, 5.9

Tri-couni Nail 5.9

Needles Ultra Classic. Probably the most photographed route in the Needles of Custer State Park. Park at the pull out just above the Cathedral Spires parking lot. Climb up then walk downhill then back up between the rocks that make up Super Pin, Queen Pin and Tri couni Nail. Climb and scramble up and to the right. This elegant three headed spire has its first clip (a piton) about 12 feet off the ground. Follow the drilled and traditional gear up and slightly right. Then sling the pillar. From the stance atop the pillar, set a nut or two on the left and follow the route to a couple clips out left. At the stainless ring pin, traverse right then up to the last clips. The traverse is exciting!  DON'T Climb straight up!  A natural anchor is achieved by slinging the horns on top.

Descent: Needles style rappel with one rope. If you have never done a Needles style rappel, you will get a chance to expand your outdoor climbing skills here.  Take some climbing lessons from Sylvan Rocks Climbing School & Guide Service if you are not sure how to get down without an anchor.  Please do not leave unsightly slings behind.  If you have the skills, a natural top rope anchor can be set up with one rope.

Gear: Set of stoppers, maybe a small cam or 2, quick draws, and a long sling or a cordelette to make an anchor with.

Warning:  Rock Climbing can be dangerous.  Use this information at your own risk.
