John's Jump, 5.?
This route is a total stupid human trick. It’s great, it’s a lot of fun, but not without its risk. To get there, climb through the rock slot beside the Needles Eye Tunnel at the Needles Eye parking lot in Custer State Park. Head down the rocks to the right. Once there, the left side of the rock hallway is Holy Terror, and the right is the rock that John's Jump is on.
From near the top of the hallway, start climbing up and left. It’s a solo for about 100 feet to a small ledge with a bolt anchor. Bring your partner up and clip into the anchors.
The fun begins here. The name comes from the jump off the ledge, about 7 feet over to the next tower. The “landing zone” consist of a head sized rock you grab with your hands and latch onto with the grip of death. The “route” is the 10 or so feet you climb to the summit after slinging the horn. A piece or two can be placed on the way up from the horn.
Gear: Guts, youthful heart, and a need for a cheap thrill…..long slings and a few stoppers or small to med. cams are good too.
Descent: You can jump back and solo down, but most take the rap anchors off the other side with a 2 rope rap.
Warning: Rock Climbing can be dangerous. Use this information at your own risk.
