Gold Line, 5.8

Gold Line, 5.8 in the Needles Eye area

From the Needles Eye parking lot just before the tunnel on the Needles Highway in Custer State Park, walk up to the guard rail below the Thimble and look down.  You want to end up here.  So hike around the Needles Eye and look back up at where you were.  From there, head to your right (south west) and when you come to the end of a large rock mass start looking for a bolted route up the granite.  The route can be started on the ground if you have a 60M rope or you can climb up the 4th class terrain approx. 30 feet to a ledge and belay there.  From the ledge head up and right to the first bolt.  Follow the bolts and pins to the summit.  From the top you can watch Black Hills tourists in the parking lot of the Needles Eye and look out towards the southern hills to the city of Custer .  Rap or set up a top rope anchor with one rope.

Gear:  Quickdraws
