Burros

Custer State Park Burros - (aka Begging Burros)  Because of so many people breaking the law and feeding these animals over the years, they are some of the worst beggars in the state of South Dakota.  If you stop, they will march up to right up to your car, and stick their heads in to ask for food.  Living on a diet of chips and slim-jims, I'm sure their cholesterol is through the roof, and their sodium level needs to be medicated.  So go check them out, but if you love them, don't feed them.  The slime and smell is free, but beware, they have been known to take a little skin with their carrots and Cheetos.  They are usually hanging out in the southern portion of Custer State Park along the Peter Norbeck Scenic Drive.

I've heard the the burros in Custer State Park date back to the 1950's when tourist used to be able to ride them up Harney Peak, the highest point in South Dakota!  You can still ride a burro to the top of Harney Peak, but now days you have to bring your own, although catching and saddleing on of these wild ones would be South Dakota vacation memory you'd never forget.  Catching a burro might be as easy as leaving the door of your RV open with a bag of  corn curls on the table, but the saddling and riding part would be harder...rock climbing the Custer State Park Needles with Sylvan Rocks is probably much safer!
