Stockade Lake in Custer State park takes its name from the Gordon Stockade built by pioneers from Iowa rushing in to reap the gold held in the Black Hills. I don't believe any of them actually got rich, but they enjoyed a beautiful place to stay. Now there is a manmade lake created by the waters of French Creek. It is the only lake in Custer State Park large enough to waterski and power boat. The fishing is good and there is a swimming beach and campground also. The lake is along the paved Mickelson trail spur which leaves out of Custer.
