'They' said it couldn't be built, but the men of the CCC went to work and SD 87 took shape weaving its path through the granite spires of what is now Custer State Park. Imagen how cool it must have been to drive a Model T along this historic road. There are tunnels, tight curves, and drop offs, so don't forget to keep at least one eye on the road. The Needles Eye and the Cathedral Spires are a couple of the highlights as the road makes its way down from Sylvan Lake to join the Wildlife loop. Bring your camera, and don't be in a rush. Stop often to take in the sights, but please pull completely off the road. I know the sight of a Mountain Goat is great, but its no excuse for leaving your car running in the middle of the road with the doors open...you laugh now, but it happens every day! Don't forget to make sure your vehicle will fit through the tunnels. After a morning of rock climbing, and an afternoon swim, heading down Needles Highway will take you to new and beautiful places
