Emancipation Rockphormation

Emancipation Rock Formation is a South Dakota climbing area worthy of its long name. According to the Mount Rushmore climbing map and publication which list some of the rules and regs for the place, it might be closed to climbing during periods of increased security. To protect our access, please respect these closures. The staff at Mt. Rushmore can get a little edgy at certain times of the year, such as the 4th of July during the big fireworks display.

To get to the formation, head south east from the Rushmore entrance along highway 244. About half a mile down there will be a wide spot in the road. From there head down to the Mount Rushmore climber registration station and check out the map. The Emancipation Rock Formation climbing is north east from there.

Garfield Goes To Washington: 5.8 This route is a favorite of the area. It's a 3 pitch beauty that works its way up the White House Wall. In a bit of a huge notch, take the left facing dihedral up through the first 2 pitches. Below the big rotten section of rock on the wall, head right and then up the headwall. The descent off the backside is considered by many to be the best way down. It is possible to rap also.
