The volunteers at Custer County Search and Rescue have been keeping busy up in Custer State Park around the Sylvan Lake area. There seems to be a rash of young people looking to put some air under their feet and climb around on the rocks with no safety
gear. Below is a photo of me doing a pick-off of a gal who started climbing up a crack in the rocks, and got a little higher then prudent and that is where she stayed for over an hour before we could get to her.

Luckily all ended well and we were able to get her on the ground safely. There have been several instances in the last few years that have not ended so well. A few gals got a ride to the hospital in the ambulance, and one youth did not make it.
Long story short...Adventures are great, but gravity plays for keeps, so if you want to rock climb, please sign up for a course, and we will have a lot more fun out there doing things right as opposed to then coming up to the Lake to pluck you off a rock
in a situation that puts us all at increased risk.
